Cue the cuteness. My daughter hit the jackpot when I was selected to test the new Roxy Swimsuit Pattern from Made for Mermaids. She had been asking for suits and boy, did she get some! Here are a few looks I made for this new pattern release and my full review of the pattern.
This suit is the long peplum with view b bottoms. It provides the ability to create a two piece suit while still providing coverage. My daughter loves the peplum skirt on these suits.
Here is a closer look at the bottoms. The ruching is very slight and is hardly seen in this patterned fabric. The thing I love about this two piece is my daughter can get a suit that fits her slender build. Retail suits are always baggy in the tush and legs. For this suit I was able to use the 4 waist, graded to 5 hip and 7 length.
The ruched straps are another great feature and I absolutely love the sweetheart neckline.
Roxy Swimsuit Pattern- Sewing Pattern Review:
Pattern Description: The Roxy Swimsuit is a cute two piece swimsuit with 3 top options (bikini, short peplum and long peplum) and 2 bottom options (high waisted and ruched). The sweetheart neckline and gathered straps offer a classic and stylish suit with a bit of a vintage look.
Pattern Sizing: 1/2-14, I made the 5 width and 7 length, grading to a 4 in the waist.
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it? Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow?Yes, this pattern is simple for a swimsuit. The instructions are easy to follow and include detailed pictures. Some simple tricks for a more polished swimsuit are to always baste and make sure to baste when multiple layers are attached. Although the directions do not say to baste when attaching the side seams or the crotch seam, I did make sure to because it is 4 layers of fabric and easily shifts. Save yourself some time and frustration by adding basting to these steps and don’t skip it when it is called for in the pattern. Also, tie off the thread tales on your gathered straps basting stitches to help hold the gathers together.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?I love the options of the pattern. The sweetheart neckline and gathered straps are two of my favorite features. The separate pieces allow for an easy fit for my daughter who tends to not fit well in retail swimsuits.
Fabric Used: Swim Fabric- the blue polka dots and ric rac fabric are so old I no longer remember where they are from. The red floral is from Denver Fabrics Online Store, the Solid Navy is from the Colorado Fabrics store, the bright blue and lining fabric are from Joann Fabrics.
You will also need 3/8 inch swim elastic. I used this from Dritz. Had I known how many swimsuits I would end up cranking out, I should have saved myself some money and purchased a roll like these…lesson learned!
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:None, other than to grade for the perfect fit.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?Absolutely. This is a great beginner pattern for anyone wanting to sew a swimsuit or for the more experienced sewist looking to add to their pattern stash. It also has the potential to be a very cute dress or shirt (more pics will be on my blog of the dress hack soon). This pattern is versatile, relatively quick, and easy.
Conclusion: This swimsuit is fantastic. It is quick to crank out several, mix and match the options to create several looks and to hack into everyday wear like tops and dresses. My daughter loves her suit and I love that I don’t need to buy ill fitting store bought suits for her frame.
This is the bikini top view with the ruched bottom, view b. You can see the ruching much better on this solid fabric.
And just for fun I whipped up a size 14 for myself in the Roxy swimsuit pattern to have a little match with my daughter for this photo shoot. The full adult sizing will be available as well on the Made for Mermaids site so you can create mommy and daughter looks for this set.
I have posted more sewing pattern reviews as well as another swimsuit review here. The M4M Alexandria Suit also just released and I have a full review here.
I hope you have enjoyed this review, I will post another coordinating set and suit pattern hack soon using the Roxy Swimsuit Pattern. Until next time, Happy Sewing
