Do you ever just see a pattern and know exactly what fabric you will use? Like it was just meant to be a match! That was how I felt when I first saw this super cute and stylish top. Made for Mermaids Avery Top and Dress is a great pattern for many reasons. But knowing that it would look absolutely gorgeous in this So Sew English ITY was all I needed to propel me to do the dumbest thing and cut right into this pretty fabric on try number one…and during a pattern test none the less! Definitely not the usual route I would take and not a practice I recommend, unless you want to potentially throw out a lot of your really pretty fabric! But, I am relieved that this one worked out for me. I have already worn this top a ton with no plans for stopping any time soon.
Now, don’t hate me…if you love this fabric as much as I do, you will be sad to hear they no longer have this particular one and it won’t be restocked!! A tragedy, I know! I contacted them to find out and I wish I had better news to report. But, they still have many beautiful fabrics to choose from, and while I love love love this top, I am not going to lie, this ITY was difficult to work with!
Let’s move on to some happy news…this pattern’s awesome features. First, it wins points for the different length option, one of which is my favorite curved tunic length. That means I can get the coverage I prefer when wearing this with leggings. The white tops were made with this t-shirt knit from Denverfabrics.com (Fashion Fabrics Club).
Second, it comes in girl’s sizing as well so I can match my little girl while she still will let me. It’s also a trendy pattern that tweens are sure to love, so if your daughter has outgrown her desire to match, she will still probably love having this pattern sewn up.
Third, the back. No explanation needed. To help the bands lie flat, make sure you topstitch them. Here is a quick demo of how I use the twin needle on my knit bands and hems. If you need help sewing the Avery I have a complete sew-along video here:
Did I mention the back? I did? Well, what you can’t see on my post, because I only tested this version, is that this also has an open back option. Perfect for your workout gear. And make sure to check out the hood hack for another great sporty look–so cute!!
And last, but certainly not least, the options that come with the pattern along with the ability to hack this into even more great looks. I wrote a full post on two hacks, including a video tutorial for this drape front vest hack:
There are always fun hack ideas posted with each pattern on the Made for Mermaids site. Make sure to check them all out.
I hope you enjoyed this look at the new Made for Mermaids Avery Top and Dress Pattern. It is sure to make a great addition to your pattern stash- so grab it during release week for special pricing!
Until next time, Happy Sewing!
