This week I am sharing a duster length cardigan I made quite a while back to go with the Made for Mermaids FREE sewing pattern, Paige Piko. This was created from the Patterns for Pirates Grandpa Cardigan pattern using a couple quick changes. All my pattern details and modifications are below.
Grandpa Cardigan Sewing Review:
PATTERN DESCRIPTION:
This beginner friendly knit pattern has all the style you need in a soft comfortable cardigan! It is a classic look with trendy and modern options to choose from.
Includes sleeve options of short, 3/4, long hemmed or banded, so you can wear this year round. Has both shirt length (hits at mid-booty) and tunic length (hitting below booty–perfect to wear with leggings) to pair with all kinds of bottoms and shirts perfectly. Traditional neckband and shawl collar neckband. Patch pockets (both hemmed and banded) and elbow patches to add those special little touches!
PATTERN SIZING:
Sizes XXS-Plus 3X. I made the size Small according to my measurements. I used the 3/4 sleeve and lengthened the cardigan according to the tutorial I linked in the sewing supplies. I love the fit of the cardigan everywhere except the sleeves. While I realize this is strictly a fit preference I end up taking my sleeves in on these cardigans by at least 3 inches. I prefer a more fitted sleeve that hugs the arm. For the traditional, more relaxed fit stick with the pattern as drafted.
Supplies Needed:
Sewing Pattern, Tutorial for extending to a duster length, knit fabric (the fabric I used is no longer listed but was a brushed poly from Bow Button Fabrics), and your basic sewing supplies. Some of my favorite sewing tools are:
DID IT LOOK LIKE THE PHOTO/DRAWING ON THE PATTERN ENVELOPE ONCE YOU WERE DONE SEWING?
Yes, with the exception of the duster length and the more fitted sleeve, so maybe the answer should actually be, sort of…lol.
WERE THE INSTRUCTIONS EASY TO FOLLOW?
Yes, the instructions are very clear and detailed. This pattern would be easy for a beginning sewist to follow.
WHAT DID YOU PARTICULARLY LIKE OR DISLIKE ABOUT THE PATTERN?
I love pretty much all things labeled cardigan so I am an easy sell. lol. But, I particularly liked the length and the shawl collar option on this pattern.
WOULD YOU SEW IT AGAIN? WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS?
Yes, I made two other ones pictured below (sorry for the multiple Shannons in the blue cardigan, this was my only picture available!) and don’t plan on stopping anytime soon. This is a quick and easy pattern that I would recommend anyone looking to sew up a simple knit garment.
CONCLUSION:
For a small amount of time and an easy sew, the Grandpa Cardigan provides you with a great wardrobe builder. It is versatile and cute and sure to be in style for years to come. A great little pattern to add to your collection.
