Don’t you absolutely love the sewing community? Without them I feel like I would have missed out on so many great patterns. I often find that a pattern I simply glossed over will become a must have once I see someone’s creation. Such is the case for this tie front shirt pattern by Simplicity. Thank you sewing bloggers/instagrammers for pointing me towards this simple and cute top. Let me tell you a bit about the pattern and why I am loving it.
I picked up the pattern because I had read other reviews that mentioned it was a pretty quick and easy sew. That always makes me excited to give a pattern a try because let’s face it…sewing time and fabric is precious. After picking up this
I set to work deciding which view I wanted to tackle first. Seeing Erica Bunker’s beautiful yellow version gave me all the heart eyes for view C. I had originally had my heart set on a basic white top that would work well in my wardrobe but then found this fun red fabric (actually a 100% cotton curtain panel) on a thrift store stop and had to give it a try. I am so glad I did because I think having this pop of red in my closet is just what I needed.
Simplicity 8601 Pattern Review: Tie Front Shirt Pattern
PATTERN DESCRIPTION:
This easy-to-sew pullover top for Misses feature tie waist and sleeve variations. Create a trendy look by adding trims to the sleeves.
PATTERN SIZING:
6-22. I cut the straight size 6 for this one and it is a tad too snug. I have been having issues getting a good fit with my shoulders on big 4 patterns lately. I think I need a broad back adjustment to correct it, but have yet to try it out on this pattern. I ended up taking a 3/8 inch seam allowance on the sleeve to give myself a little extra room.
DID IT LOOK LIKE THE PHOTO/DRAWING ON THE PATTERN ENVELOPE ONCE YOU WERE DONE SEWING?
Yes, I made view C with no changes to the pattern.
WERE THE INSTRUCTIONS EASY TO FOLLOW?
Yes, this is a very simple pattern to put together. The most difficult parts come from getting a clean looking point on the ties (mine certainly aren’t perfection) and the narrow seam if you are unfamiliar with those techniques.
WHAT DID YOU PARTICULARLY LIKE OR DISLIKE ABOUT THE PATTERN?
I loved the ties. They add a fun pop to a basic design. I loved that there were no buttonholes or zippers to sew. Just an easy fabric loop to add the button on the back, or Erica’s review I mentioned above has a thread chain tutorial for another option. I don’t love the length on this top…this is as short as I would want it to hit. I noticed many people had the split start lower on their versions and I will do that on my next ones as I don’t love the peek a boo action on my stomach.
WOULD YOU SEW IT AGAIN? WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS?
Yes, I plan on making this top again and already have it cut out. I am going to try to some different top stitching designs to create another look. I would also like to make this in a basic white fabric for a great white top/jeans look for my closet this fall.
CONCLUSION:
I think this pattern is a fun one. It provides a trendy look with the ties and is a quick and easy sew. It’s easy to throw on with jeans but could also be dressed up a little, adding to its versatility. I am so glad I found the other online reviews and looks for this pattern on instagram so that I ended up buying this pattern.
I really am trying to wrap up this first collection of mine. I feel like I decide to finish and then, oh wait…I want one more piece, which leads to another, to another…so I need to work on this whole sewing in collections thing still.
