I love taking an easy pattern and adding even more options to fill out my wardrobe. The Jolene Pattern from Seamingly Smitten is perfect for this type of project. I gave a full review using the pattern close to its original form here. While I love the look of that dress, it was fun to create a totally different version using the same pattern base. Read on below to see how I created this DIY Midi Turtleneck Dress.

To create this look I knew I wanted to extend the length to below the knee and add a side slit. I was inspired by this look that I found styled and photographed on Mary Orton’s blog: Memorandum.
Pattern Modifications
To create this look I simply extended the length of the dress pattern 12 inches. Starting at the hip area I drew a straight line down to remove the flair and create a dress with negative ease for a fitted look. After cutting, I sewed the pattern per the instructions stopping the side seam where I wanted the slit to be. I simply folded and pressed the seam allowance back from the side seam slit to the hem and topstitched it to create the slit.
My sleeves were cut shorter due to a lack of fabric. I also had to make my turtleneck wider because the fabric did not have enough stretch and I couldn’t get the first one (cut at pattern size) over my head…LOL. This fabric was purchased at a thrift store and while I know it is a ribbed knit, I am unsure of any other fabric information.
