As you read this I should be walking around one of the Disney World parks, hopefully enjoying much warmer weather than what you see pictured here. While I am having a blast wearing Disney t-shirts, mouse ears and screaming like crazy on Expedition Everest, the sad reality remains that soon I will be coming back home and needing to throw on something to keep cozy and warm. Since our winter finally decided to appear in Colorado, I thought it was a great time to finally whip up my own DIY Oversized Sweatshirt using Simplicity Pattern 8738.
After I saw the fabulous Brittany J Jones post a video sew along (side note: I have an addiction to sew along videos, just love them so much) I dug out my pattern I had purchased awhile back and got to work. By the way, let’s throw up a link to that video just in case you enjoy a video about sewing as much as I do 🙂
Simplicity 8738 Pattern ReviewPattern Review Title
PATTERN DESCRIPTION:
Keep cozy and warm with these easy-to-sew, versatile sweater-knit patterns for Misses. Includes cropped top, tunic, and dress options with turtle or crew necks and dropped shoulders. Add lacing or ties to sleeves and/or sides to make these tops uniquely you
PATTERN SIZING:
XXS-XXL, I cut the extra XXS even though I am not. My actual size would have been the Small but after reading reviews commenting on just how big this oversized sweatshirt was, I decided to slim it down a tad. While I love the body on it, I don’t love the way the dropped sleeve fits/looks in this quilted fabric. Maybe a different fabric choice would lay better, but I kind of feel like a linebacker with these sleeves!
Supplies Needed:
Simplicity 8738 Pattern:
Knit Fabric: I used a reversible quilted knit that I found at Joann Fabrics and Crafts. I think it is a tad too stiff for this pattern as the dropped shoulder sits funny. Here is a similar fabric
DID IT LOOK LIKE THE PHOTO/DRAWING ON THE PATTERN ENVELOPE ONCE YOU WERE DONE SEWING?
Yes, but without the very huge oversized effect.
WERE THE INSTRUCTIONS EASY TO FOLLOW?
Yes, this pattern is very simple and easy to follow. Should you have any questions, watching the sew along video I linked should remedy those issues.
WHAT DID YOU PARTICULARLY LIKE OR DISLIKE ABOUT THE PATTERN?
I liked the turtleneck and the cozy look of the pattern. I didn’t love how huge and relaxed the oversize effect was and knew I wanted to slim it down slightly.
WOULD YOU SEW IT AGAIN? WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS?
I don’t know if I will make it again. It was super quick and easy but I don’t love the dropped sleeve on me. Maybe I will try a different weight fabric and see if I like the look better. This is an easy pattern for beginners and an easy one for knits.
CONCLUSION: This pattern comes together quickly and easily. If you like way oversized pieces you would probably enjoy this sweatshirt. I love the body on the one I sized down but unsure how I feel about the dropped sleeve. I am not sure I love it enough to make more of them.
