One of the many great things about sewing is the ability to see something you love and make it for yourself. Inspiration is all around and lately I have wanted to try to recreate some of my favorite Pinterest Pins using my sewing skills. Here is my first attempt at creating a dress to look similar to this lovely sold out dress from Milly.
I saw this dress on two lovely bloggers: Memorandum and Gal Meets Glam and wanted to get a similar look for my own closet. I thought the Wiggle Dress from Patterns for Pirates was a perfect starting place paired with this Art Gallery Knit fabric I had on hand.
DIY Dress Tutorial:
If you prefer a visual, I have created a video for how to create this dress. **Just a small disclaimer that this video has some editing errors that were a result of changing phones mid filming and losing some video and editing capabilities. I apologize for this goof!**You can find the link here:
Instructions:
- Cut out your fabric using the Wiggle Dress pattern from Patterns for Pirates at the above the knee line, as well as your sleeve and neckline preferences. I used the 3/4 sleeve length and the scoop back neckline.
- Measure from your shoulder to under your bum where you would like the flare to begin. Mark that measurement on your dress and trim the excess fabric from the hem of the dress. (I wanted my dress to be 41 inches total length like the inspiration dress and used that to help determine where to cut my dress and how long to make my circle skirt (flounce).)
- Create the circle skirt hemline (flounce) by measuring the opening of the dress at the hemline. Use this measurement as your “waist” in an on-line circle skirt calculator to determine your circle skirt measurements. I made my circle skirt 8 inches long. Here is a circle skirt calculator if you need one.
- Fold your fabric in half, and then in half again and draw your circle skirt using the measurements from the calculator. Cut out your skirt. It should look like a donut once it is cut out.
- Sew your wiggle dress as usual, minus the hem at the bottom. When you get to that step, place your circle skirt right sides together at the hem of the dress and stitch. Turn right side out and viola…your dress is complete. Give it a final press and go dance around.
I hope you enjoyed this take on my Pinspiration Dress. Until next time, Happy Sewing
