Anybody have a reluctant model they sew for? My husband is not one to jump in front of the camera, so when he agreed to try the new Made for Mermaids Men’s Jordan Pattern I was a bit surprised. Although I had to put up with a small amount of complaining during pictures and he may never set foot in front of the camera again, I think he did a great job. Help me cheer him on to keep modeling for me…give him some love in the comments 🙂 Now, onto what he is wearing.
MADE FOR MERMAIDS MEN’S JORDAN PATTERN REVIEW
PATTERN DESCRIPTION:
Men’s Jordan is the perfect staple tee pattern with loads of options! This semi-fitted tee is cut straight down from the chest. You can choose from a straight top length and a split hem top length! With multiple sleeve options including sleeveless, short sleeves, 3/4 sleeves, long sleeves, and long thumbhole sleeves (not cuffed!), this pattern will work wonderfully in every season. Choose from either a crew neckband or a 3-piece hood with optional lining and/or drawstring. Add the optional kangaroo pocket for endless combinations.
PATTERN SIZING:
So, my hubby can be very difficult to fit. He is 6’4 and I still can’t figure out where his height is, it seems as though every RTW top and bottom is a different fitting fiasco. I was able to get a great fit on the torso using the tall option on the pattern. I did not have to add any length. However, he must have long arms because although I thought I had measured the sleeve against his well fitting shirts, the long sleeve top I made required me to add a sleeve cuff because it was too short. So, on future tops I will add a couple inches to the tall sleeve option when cutting long sleeves. His short sleeves were following the tall sleeve option (no additional modifications) and I feel are great.
Sizes available: XXS-XXXL with short, average, and tall cut lines
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
-Knit fabric with good stretch and recovery. I was on a tight deadline and needed to shop locally. This left me two options Joann and Hobby Lobby. I found the colors I was looking for at Hobby Lobby, much to my surprise. I purchased this rayon spandex in light blue. At 50% off it was a great deal. While it worked okay for this shirt, it is a bit on the thin side and a tad annoying to work with. Make sure you are starching the neckband to help prevent rolling and be careful not to stretch the fabric while sewing to prevent pulling. I will be making more shirts in either a bamboo lycra or cotton spandex for a bit thicker option. I made my husband’s long sleeve top from Joann cotton spandex and the fabric was much easier to work with. (Although the stripes are actually vertical for most stretch, but I didn’t want them that direction and took my chances. The neckband and cuff had to be cut with the stretch and that is why the stripe is a different direction. Can’t believe I didn’t notice this at the store.)
DID IT LOOK LIKE THE PHOTO/DRAWING ON THE PATTERN ENVELOPE ONCE YOU WERE DONE SEWING?
Yes- the light blue is the short sleeve style top. No modifications. The long sleeve striped needed cuffs added to the sleeves to accommodate for my husband’s long arms that I forgot to adjust for on the pattern.
WERE THE INSTRUCTIONS EASY TO FOLLOW?
They are very easy to follow. Simple and straightforward, you can feel confident putting this together if it is your first time working with a knit pattern or if you are an experienced t-shirt maker.
WHAT DID YOU PARTICULARLY LIKE OR DISLIKE ABOUT THE PATTERN?
I love that the pattern is no-trim pages and has layers to print only the size you need. It comes together quickly and provides you with many easy options to get the most versatility out of a basic shirt pattern.
WOULD YOU SEW IT AGAIN? WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS?
Yes, I have made two for my husband and a set for my three boys, but I plan for more tops for my whole family. This is a great basic pattern that can be made in a variety of ways and I look forward to more tops made in my children’s and husband’s custom sizes. You can see my children’s Jordan Review here.
CONCLUSION:
A simple pattern with easy to follow instructions provides a great wardrobe staple. Many options to create tops and hoodies with several different looks are found within one pattern.
Until Next Time,
Happy Sewing
