I had the pleasure of testing the new release of the Chloe Dress Pattern by Laela Jeyne. My daughter loves wearing dresses so I always love to have the opportunity to try out a new pattern that she may like. When I saw the Chloe Dress, the open back detail immediately caught my eye. I also gravitate towards maxi dresses so this pattern was sucking me in from the beginning. Read on to see my full pattern review.
Chloe Dress Pattern Review:
Pattern Description-
The Girls’ Chloe Dress PDF pattern is an open back woven dress with cap or flutter sleeves with two length options. Tested pattern pieces for girls’ sizes 12M-10. No trim pages for US and A4 paper
Pattern Sizing-
For this pattern I blended sizes according to the pattern. I used a size 5 in the width and 7 in the length to achieve the correct sizing for my daughter.
Did it look like the pattern envelope when you were done sewing it?
Yes
Were the instructions easy to follow?
Most of the pattern was easy to understand but I had a little trouble attaching the skirt to the back bodice where the back meets the elasticized waist.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I like the open back detail and the elasticized waist since my daughter is slender and it is hard to get patterns to fit her small waist. The no trim pages on the pattern are always a major plus as well as having a layered pattern so I only had to print the size I need and not have to trace anything. I didn’t like the fit on a few parts and I will discuss more in the pattern alterations.
Fabric Used:
I used a clearance cotton from Hobby Lobby. It was a few bucks a yard and I thought it was colorful and fun. The fabric may be a tad stiff for this pattern.
Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I sewed the pattern as directed however I had to take in the back bodice pieces quite a bit due to large gaping. When I took a wedge out of each one I no longer had a long enough piece to attach it to the skirt piece correctly. The cap sleeves were also too small in my dress but this was corrected for the final pattern. The maxi dress was not roomy enough for my daughter to walk comfortably so I will have to shorten it to the knee. I do not know if extra width was added to the final pattern.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I plan to sew it again and see if I can get a better fit for the back bodice. I think it is a cute summer style. I would possibly recommend this for intermediate and above with a warning regarding the fit issues mentioned above.
Conclusion:
I have made another open back dress like this before for my daughter and that pattern is a lot more challenging and time consuming. This one comes together much faster and provides a cute style. I personally feel that there are some fit concerns with this pattern but I would like to remake the finalized pattern and I will give my updated review then.
