I love great free patterns (make sure you check out my post with over 100 free patterns here) and around this time of year, you will often see many designers adding to their free pattern lists. For the past couple of years I have been fortunate to work with Made for Mermaids to help test out their free patterns. Every year they offer 12 freebies and they always have some fun ones I get to sew up. This year I made this blanket poncho and I am so thrilled to share it with you today. **You can find over 100 free pattern links from awesome designers HERE.**
This poncho comes in 3 sizes – adult, children and dolly and has a couple different finishing options. You can add belt loops and add your own belt, toggle closures, make it reversible or fray the edges.
Supplies for Poncho
For my DIY Blanket Poncho Wrap I chose to use a blanket I thrifted. I specifically was looking for something that would work with this pattern when I went shopping. I found this lighter weight blanket that was already fringed (more on that later) for $4. It was nice and large and was just enough fabric for this pattern. This does take a LARGE chunk of fabric, so if you are looking to save I would try thrifting a blanket or picking up flannel on deep discount.
There is minimal sewing involved as you finish the neckline and just add buttonholes if you desire. I added bias tape around my neckline for a clean finish…but it did take a bit to sew all that on and then handstitch it down. I saved a little time and opted to wear it draped, no buttonholes. Remember when I said this blanket was fringed? Well, sadly the pattern and the blanket didn’t quite match to make the fringe that was already there work. So…I did have to fray this and that did take some time…not gonna lie 🙂 But if you are dreading the fraying, you can finish it with a serger and leave the edge exposed, make it reversible or turn it up and hem. I did a little video tutorial on creating a frayed hem awhile back if you need help…just remember this poncho is much more surface area to fray so you will be working on it for a bit longer.
How to Add a Frayed Hem
I really am loving how cute and easy this wrap is to throw on. Since the pattern is oversized, it also makes great gifts when you may not know exact sizes for patterns. I hope you enjoyed this look at another fabulous free pattern. Make sure you check out my full post on free patterns here.
Until Next Time,
