During the 12 days of freebies from Made for Mermaids a fun hooded scarf pattern was one of the free gifts. I knew when I saw it that it would make a super cute dino spiked scarf for my dinosaur loving boy. I used the following tutorial to add the spikes to this free pattern. Enjoy.

DIY Dino Spiked Tutorial
Materials and Supplies:
1.Free Pattern for the Hooded Scarf from Made for Mermaids
2. Printable Pattern for Dino Spikes, or draw your own (Please note this is a very rough hand drawing by yours truly…clearly I am not a pattern designer, but it will get the job done here 🙂
3. Fleece Fabric or fabric of your choice for scarf and spikes. I used this fabric from Joann Stores for both the scarf and spikes
4. Fusible Interfacing – Medium weight or firmer is best to help the spikes hold their shape
Steps to Sew Dino Spikes:
- Cut out hooded scarf pieces according to free pattern and tutorial on the Made for Mermaids Blog. In addition to the regular pattern, cut out 2 dino spikes from your fabric (mirror images)
- Add interfacing to the dino spikes on the wrong side of the fabric
- Place the dino spikes right sides together and stitch along the the spiked edge using a 1/4 inch seam allowance
- Trim your corners and clip your spikes as needed to help the fabric turn. Turn right sides out, use a turning tool or preferred tool to turn your spikes out.
- Lay your spikes right sides together, with the raw edge of the spikes lined up with the raw edge of the hood. I started my first spike a few inches back on the hood, but you can place this on how you would like. Baste your spikes onto one side of the hood. Then lay your other hood piece, right sides together on top of the hood with added spikes. (Your spikes should be sandwiched in between the 2 hood pieces). Stitch together using a 1/2 inch seam allowance.Â
- Complete the scarf per the tutorial on Made for Mermaids blog using your hood with spikes.Â
