The story behind me making this DIY Felt Tea Party Food Set is kind of comical to me. You see, I tried my hand at felt food in November of last year and failed. Like, miserably failed…to the point my own children gave me a look like, I thought you could sew mom! So when the creators of this pattern were looking for some testers I let them know, “wish I could help, but you don’t want me touching this pattern.” Lesson learned, never say this to them. They will twist your arm and pressure you so hard in to trying you will wish you never opened your mouth in the first place. LOL I joke, kind of, but I truly would have never tried this if I wasn’t pressured into it because of my previous fail. And you know what? They were right. I should have given my sewing skills another try and I shouldn’t back down just because it didn’t turn out the first time. I am so happy I not only tried, but I produced a DIY Felt Tea Party Food Set that I am actually pleased to be able to show you. I would love to share some things I learned along the way that I hope will help you create this beautifully designed felt food.

Supplies Needed:
I think the most important part of making sure this project turns out comes down to the prep. Make sure you think about what you want your final product to look like. What color do you want your cookies, icing, filling, etc? Do you have the right color felt and embroidery floss to match? What about little cute toppings for the cookies and macaroons? Here are some supplies I used to help my felt food turn out. Most of these items are easily found at your local craft store or online- I have linked several items below that would work well.
Felt for Food- This is what you will use to create the main base of all the food. The cookie colors, the tea bag heart, the sandwiches (which I did not sew up), the icing on the frosting, etc. So you could plan out specific colors for a coordinating theme or buy yourself a multi-colored package to cover your options.
2mm thick felt for the sandwiches and sugar cookie base:
1mm thick felt for the cookie icing and macaroons:
Other items needed: ribbon for macaroon filing, embroidery floss, poly-fil
**I chose to use a pre-gathered ribbon to give my macaroons a little extra fullness. Although I couldn’t find my exact product, here is a similar look from Hobby Lobby. Watch for their 50% off ribbons and spools sales which often run. I used the Merchant 41 brand decorative trim and the Ribbon Boutique brand.
Embroidery Floss: This is used on the edges of your cookies and can be used to create thread “sprinkles” on the top of the icing. I chose a variegated tan floss to help match my felt. I also used a pink color for the tea bag string.
Poly-fil for stuffing the food:
You may have noticed the little “sprinkles” and macaroon decorations. I think these little touches make all the difference. I chose to use Bead Treasures: #1 Hexagon Glass Beads in crystal rainbow for the sprinkles from Hobby Lobby found here and little flower buttons and felt leaves for the macaroons. Again, watch for the 50% off sales on these items as they are often on sale.
DID IT LOOK LIKE THE PHOTO/DRAWING ON THE PATTERN ENVELOPE ONCE YOU WERE DONE SEWING?
Luckily, yes! I was so nervous about creating these as my previous attempts at felt food were rough. A couple tips that I think made a big difference for my own sewing were making sure I cut the circles carefully. If you don’t feel like your circles look even after stitching, trim them down to even them out and look better. I also think hand sewing the edges of the sugar cookie with embroidery floss is easier to hide flaws than sewing around the edge with a machine. Use hot glue to hold your macaroons together. It is far easier than stitching them as you are working with multiple layers. Also, simply adding the little cute touches to the tops of the cookies brings them up a notch. I hope these tips will help you when putting your DIY Felt Food together.
WERE THE INSTRUCTIONS EASY TO FOLLOW?
Yes, these are very easy to follow. There are no real confusing steps. I made the tea bag, macaroons and sugar cookies. By far the easiest is the sugar cookie, so if you are new to this or nervous, start with that one. The ruffle basting on the macaroon is a little hard as I used some wider ribbon than recommended so I ended up moving my ribbon towards the center of the circle a touch to help with how much “filling” was hanging out. Also, the tea bag is not difficult, but you do need to follow the instructions for folding at the correct measurements.
WHAT DID YOU PARTICULARLY LIKE OR DISLIKE ABOUT THE PATTERN?
What’s not to like? How cute is this felt food? Although I was intimidated at first, these came together for me and I love them.
WOULD YOU SEW IT AGAIN? WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS?
Yes, it is no small thing that I would make these again since I was so scared of felt food. LOL (read my blog post intro to hear that story). I would like to make these for gifts and for my son’s preschool class. One thing to keep in mind is your use of products if making for small children. I will leave off the beads and buttons if making for the classroom and use thread details instead for sprinkles and any macaroon decorations. I would recommend this for people looking to make some sweet little felt food creations without a ton of frustration. Made for Mermaids also has a free felt food set available if you would like to try your hand before purchasing a pattern…however, keep in mind the freebie is where I failed and I am so happy I tried this felt food pattern. It could just have been me, but I felt these were easier to make cute!
CONCLUSION:
If you are looking for a great gift idea or providing a sweet little tea party set for the kids in your life, this is a fabulous pattern set. You will get the pattern to create 4 different items (tea bag, sugar cookies, macaroons, and tea sandwiches) all in this one pattern.
