DIY Knit Dress: Suzy Dress Pattern Review
PATTERN DESCRIPTION:
Suzy is a comfortable, elegant and easy to sew dress. Intended for knit fabrics and with an overlapping front skirt it is the perfect dress to take you from work to weekend. Easy to style up or down, it would be a comfortable, yet chic alternative to the usual festive dress code.
Suzy comes with two neckline variations: Version 1 features a scoop neckline, while version 2 comes with an elegant boatneck. There are also two sleeve lengths to choose from, short or 3/4 length, which makes this dress perfect to wear all year round.
PATTERN SIZING:
UK 4-28 (US 0-24, EU 32-56) I made the size 8 bust graded to a 10 waist and hip. I found no issues in sizing. These were perfect for me the first try. Based on personal preference I may bring the skirt in slightly, but again that is a personal fit preference and not the pattern.
Supplies Needed:
Pattern: Suzy Dress
Fabric: I used a cotton spandex from Art Gallery. The fabric was amazing to work with and I highly recommend their fabric line.
Recommended on pattern-
The Suzy dress is designed for knit fabrics with two-way stretch. We recommend using medium weight knits with at least 20% stretch, such as cotton jersey, cotton spandex or ponte di Roma. It is best to stay away from very thin and very stretchy fabrics, especially if you are making the dress versions, as these fabrics tend to stick to your body and aren’t very flattering. In addition, knits with more weight to them are are much easier to handle and work with, so keep that in mind if you are a beginner in working with these types of fabrics.
DID IT LOOK LIKE THE PHOTO/DRAWING ON THE PATTERN ENVELOPE ONCE YOU WERE DONE SEWING?
Yes, I made the dress to reflect the pattern.
WERE THE INSTRUCTIONS EASY TO FOLLOW?
Very detailed instructions with thorough descriptions. Each part is clear, but there are sew along videos if you need additional help.
WHAT DID YOU PARTICULARLY LIKE OR DISLIKE ABOUT THE PATTERN?
I liked that it is designed for knits, flattering silhouette, boat neck and scoop neck options and a tie belt for the waist. Personally I would like the length to be shorter for personal preference.
WOULD YOU SEW IT AGAIN? WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS?
I think this dress is a great basic with some fun details like the split hem. I will probably make one in a solid fabric with a shortened hem line. This pattern is beginner friendly with no difficult steps or closures.
CONCLUSION:
A great classic silhouette and comfy jersey dress in one. This pattern is easy to put together and can look great dressed up in heels or thrown on with sandals and a jean jacket for a casual look.
