Recently I was able to test the newly updated Lucy shorts by Made for Mermaids. I created both the girl’s and women’s shorts and am happy to report this is a quick and easy sew. I had so much fun creating these DIY shorts with pom-pom trim and a frayed hem. Check out below to see how to create these looks.

DIY Shorts: Frayed Hem
I really love this first pair. I have had this blue and white striped linen in my stash for years. It was gifted to me by my mom and I have been looking for projects that would be a good fit. I knew when I saw Emily Hallman use this cute frayed hem detail on a gingham dress that I had to try it on these shorts. The pattern allows you to finish the hem in several ways, including a double fold hem, bias tape, and trim…so why not throw one more into the mix? Here is a look at the frayed hem on the women’s curved hem, 4.5 inch inseam shorts. You can find a quick video demo of this technique below.

DIY Pom-Trimmed Shorts
My second look used this cute fabric I picked up on clearance from Joanns and some pink mini Pom Pom Trim. As much as I love these shorts and the way they turned out, I have to be honest that adding the pom pom trim was somewhat challenging. Be prepared to go very slow as you are working with a small hem allowance. Attach your zipper foot so that you can sew right next to the pom trim. After you have completed your shorts, simply line up your trim with the bottom edge of your shorts. I like to attach with the top of the trim on the inside of the shorts so it is not seen on the outside. Run a straight stitch, using the zipper foot to allow you to sew close to the edge, catching the trim.
Lucy Shorts Pattern Sizing Review
My daughter is wearing the size 6 width with the size 7 height in the girl’s woven straight hem option. One tip I learned while creating these shorts is to push most of the elastic towards the back of the shorts and then stitch it on the side seams. This helps the front stay flat as most of the elastic used for shaping is for the rear. Although this adjustment depends on your particular body shape, it is nice to be able to play around with it using the regular elastic casing method in the pattern until you find what works best for you.
My shorts are the women’s size purple, with a blue sized waist elastic. This is the woven, curved hem using a 4.5 inch inseam.
