In an effort to show off the fabulous free patterns available from reputable pattern makers, I am working my way through sewing some of the options I recently posted about in my Beginner’s Guide to Free Sewing Patterns. Have you had a chance to take a look at all that’s listed? I have over 100 links to amazing clothing, maternity, accessory, lingerie patterns and more. Today, let’s take a look at a perfect little pattern that is available in both children’s and adult. The Walk the Plank PJ Pants are a perfect beginner sewing pattern and great way to make matching pants in a jiffy when needed (I am talking about you Christmas jammies!)

One of the complaints I hear about PDF patterns is the taping/cutting. If you fall into that camp, you may really enjoy knowing that this pattern has only one pattern piece to put together! That’s right, the leg piece is the same for front and back which is an awesome time saver for taping, cutting and sewing with less seams…it does however mean you will need to have enough fabric to fit two legs. This is easy to achieve in the children’s sizes, but make sure you check the needed yardage in the adult pattern as they can be quite wide and need to fit. You also don’t want to have to flip your fabric if it is directional and end up with one leg’s design upside down (Not that I would ever do such a thing or know anything about that..LOL) An added bonus with Patterns for Pirates PDF is the no-trim pages. Just print and tape…one more huge plus to this pattern.
One of the best parts of PDF Patterns that I love is the wide amount of sizes in one pattern, but the ability to only print/cut what you need. Traditional paper patterns require the extra step of tracing a pattern piece if you are wanting to save the tissue, so printing just the size I need is great for me as I have 4 children and different sizes to sew for in a pattern like this. It is also fantastic for blending sizes. My oldest son is very thin and falls into a size 5 waist and 8 length…Grading across 3 sizes isn’t recommended but I was able to cut the size 6 width, 8 length and use size 5 elastic length in the waist to give him pajamas that stay up perfectly while not being too short. This is often a problem for him in retail clothing. The Patterns for Pirates all have the layering option on them which allows you to only select and print the sizes you need! This is a huge time saver.
If you are new to sewing, this is a great first pattern to try. There are minimal seams to sew, straight lines for the most part, no tricky closures to include, and easy to follow instructions. If you are more experienced, this is a very quick and easy sew to whip up but do realize that because it is quick, it does not include pockets or a drawstring waistband. You could add patch pockets to the pants if you absolutely need them, but there is no outer leg seam to add inseam pockets. (They even have a blog post on how to add pockets to the pants here.)**However- the pattern without pockets is a great little option for shorts or pants that can not have pockets like my son’s flag football team. I can whip up a pair of sports shorts using this pattern.**
From cut to sew this pattern is quick. You will only need to cut two pieces of fabric using one pattern piece and have a piece of elastic to put this together. Some great elastic options (especially if you think you may make a bunch of these) are to buy elastic on the roll. It is much more affordable this way. Here are some great options:
For fabric, flannel works well for these pants. If you want something lighter choose a cotton fabric. You can also make this up in a cozy knit but technically the pattern is drafted for woven fabrics. I used some flannel from Joanns that I picked up a couple years ago.
