Sometimes you just find a pattern that you can’t get enough of, and this winter I am loving the fit, comfort, and ease of whipping up the Simplicity 8982 pattern. This is my third take on this top and when paired with some of my favorite bell bottoms (details on these jeans below) I had the perfect base for my recent cape: McCalls 8029 which you can read all about here.
When making Simplicity 8982 I have absolutely loved adding a turtleneck instead of the mock neck the pattern includes. This particular one in the white is perfect! I cut the neck piece at about 8.5 inches tall, so that when folded in half and sewn in to the neckline, it is the perfect full turtleneck height. The zebra hacci one was cut at about 10 inches and ended up being a bit too tall for my personal taste. I wrote up a full pattern review of Simplicity 8982 here if you would like more details.
Both the green zebra hacci and the cream Sherpa french terry (which is what fabric dreams are made of btw) are available at Mily Mae Fabrics. The Sherpa french terry is probably my favorite fabric to wear to date- this is my second cozy top. I also made a Nora Sweatshirt from DIBY Club in the rust color, pictured below. It is absolutely dreamy and warm…winter clothing perfection. However, it is thick to sew and while my machine had no problems, it is something to be aware of when ordering.
I also sewed Simplicity 8982 in the original mock neck but with a wider sleeve. It was so fun to mix up fabric and add a little sparkle in a sequin sleeve. There is a full review of this make here.
As I was saying…I really love this pattern. It is a quick and easy sew and just a fantastic little pattern. I have really enjoyed wearing and making all of these tops! I decided to pair this cream turtleneck with some DIY Bell Bottoms for a fun little 70’s vibe.
These cute bell bottoms are the Bailey Bell Pattern that I wrote all about here. This pair is made with stretch denim…and they are TIIIIGGGHHTTT but in that good way I feel denim is supposed to be tight. There was just enough stretch to work for the pattern but I should have sized up my waistband just a bit more. This is the smaller flare and I prefer it over the dramatic flare I previously made, seen below.
I hope you enjoyed this quick review of the many looks the Simplicity 8982 has provided and how it was the perfect base for my McCalls Cape. I will be back next time talking a bit about the purse I made to complete the look.
Until next time,
Happy Sewing
