Hoodies….I love them. If you have been following my Instagram for any length of time you know last year I posted several hoodies I created. I wear them ALL THE TIME, so I was so excited to have an opportunity to add another great pattern to my collection. Even better, the Made for Mermaids Hudson Hoodie Pattern comes in kids, Women’s and Men’s. I rarely get to sew for my hubby so I am definetly picking up this new Men’s copy (It comes in short, regular, and tall lengths…YESSSSSS) to match the women’s and kid’s one…I see matching family sweatshirts coming your way soon (sorry, not sorry hubs!!)
I was able to test both the children’s and women’s versions of this pattern. I truly do love this pattern and will highlight all the details why below in my pattern review. But, I want to take a moment and show you the versions I made of the regular pattern. Tomorrow I will be posting the hack versions I made (spoiler alert: I am currently on day 4 of wearing one of them…soooo cozy!!) This sweatshirt literally whips up so quickly but offers some great options. I love the front seaming and the front pocket. I can’t wait to keep sewing up more versions for everyone.
Let’s start with my little cutie and the kid’s pattern:
These are made with a french terry fabric from Fashion Fabrics Club. I found it in the sale section last year and it was perfect for this top. The options shown above are unlined hood, pocket, and hemmed sleeves.
My son has a rather huge head and wearing the hood up works well for him too. I am able to get it on and off of him as well since the neck holes were widened a bit in testing. I love that I can custom fit clothes for my kids because they always need longer lengths and smaller widths. This is the size 2 graded with size 3 length. The arms and body length are perfect in the longer lengths and he won’t grow out of it tomorrow (or at least, I hope!).
For the women’s version I sewed up two of the hoodies using the unlined hood, front pocket, hemmed sleeve option. The first one is made with a double knit and repurposed jersey bed sheet (striped).
This one is lightweight and super easy to throw on with jeans. Plus, navy is one of my favorite colors so I see this getting some wear (and I went matchy matchy with my toddler for this one in one of the hacks- come back tomorrow to see that look).
This one also features some repurposed fabric (I love using what I can to decrease my pile). The combo here is Walmart Men’s joggers (Black Sleeves and side panels) Floral Crepe (JOANN Stores) and Striped Double Brushed Poly (So Sew English) While this one is extremely comfortable, it will probably be finding a new home as I just don’t love it for me. I don’t know if it’s the colors, the combo or what…but I hope to find someone who does love it for themselves! It has taken me awhile to be able to accept when something just doesn’t work for me. Letting go of handmade can be hard. But, letting it sit in my closet won’t make it any better and it should be worn.
Thank you Made for Mermaids for another great pattern test. This one was so much fun. Read on below to find my pattern review:
Made for Mermaids Hudson Hoodie Pattern Review
PATTERN DESCRIPTION:
The Hudson is a fun, straight-fit hoodie. It includes flattering front seaming for a nice silhouette. The pattern includes options for a hidden kangaroo pocket, lined or unlined crossover hood. The hoodie falls at tunic length and can be worn down around the hips or slouched up. The sleeves can be finished with a cuff or hem.
PATTERN SIZING:
Kids- 1/2-14 (I made the size 2 with 3 length for my son)
Sizes Grey-Red which coordinates with the Made for Mermaids size charts. I cut a Pink chest graded to a purple hip. This pattern is a bit more relaxed fit and therefore my usual grading out at the waist to blue was not needed on this pattern.
Supplies Needed:
Pattern
Medium Weight Knit Fabric with at least 30% stretch.
DID IT LOOK LIKE THE PHOTO/DRAWING ON THE PATTERN ENVELOPE ONCE YOU WERE DONE SEWING?
Yes, these were created to reflect the final pattern. No changes to the pattern as drafted in these pictures with the exception of my son’s sweatshirt. The neckline was widened slightly after this version to help with getting the hood on and off easily.
WERE THE INSTRUCTIONS EASY TO FOLLOW?
Yes, this pattern is super easy, beginner friendly. The only somewhat tricky part (not really tricky…just need to read through carefully) is the hidden kangaroo pocket. Make sure you are following the steps outlined and using the correct seam allowance (as it does change in a couple places) and you are good to go.
WHAT DID YOU PARTICULARLY LIKE OR DISLIKE ABOUT THE PATTERN?
I absolutely love the seamlines down the front of the pattern. I think they are so flattering and I love the way it works with the kangaroo pocket construction. The pocket is of course a favorite and that there is some depth to it so you can actually hold items in it. I love a crossover hood and the options to line it for a fun contrast. I also like that you can use different fabrics to create color blocking and fun print combos.
WOULD YOU SEW IT AGAIN? WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS?
Of course, I have already made 6 of them and no plans to stop. I will be buying the men’s pattern as well so we can be that crazy matchy matchy family….better run and hide hubby!!!
CONCLUSION:
This pattern is a perfect pattern for those who love clean, easy pattern construction. The pieces go together quickly and give you a great fitting sweatshirt for the whole family. I was also able to create some fun hacks and will be posting those looks tomorrow. So as always, the Made for Mermaids patterns also come with many options which is great.
