Pom-Pom Fringe….is there anything cuter?? I jumped at the chance to test the latest Resort Collection pattern for Made for Mermaids when I saw all the samples and their beautiful trim. I am sorely regretting that only one of my cover-ups features pom-poms, but I guess it’s just an excuse to make another when I have more time. Read on to see how darling and fun this new Made for Mermaids Marisol Pattern is and what my daughter thinks of this sew.

Can you believe this adorable sheer fabric was only $2/yard at Hobby Lobby? I thought it was just perfect for this cover-up and relieved when I had just enough to make this cover-up length Marisol. I was able to use a 40% off coupon on the trim (which Hobby Lobby likes to hide in the drapery aisle) so don’t be fooled and think the store doesn’t carry it.
My daughter has been reluctantly taking pictures for me lately…but this little number she loves. I think the pink pom-poms go a long way with her too 🙂 She wears the two cover-ups that I made her frequently and has asked if she can wear them as tops. I think that means she is pretty thrilled with how they turned out!
Made for Mermaids Marisol Pattern Review
PATTERN DESCRIPTION:
The Marisol is a cover-up and dress. With three lengths to choose from, two hem options, and two sleeve styles, there are so many possibilities! Use sheer fabrics for pool/beach coverups or layering over other pieces, or use more opaque fabrics to wear anywhere!
PATTERN SIZING:
1/2-14 and women’s Grey-Red. I made my daughter the 6 width and 8 length. Mashing patterns is necessary for all my kids and fortunately it has gotten easier the more I do it. Make sure if you are mashing a smaller width on a taller frame, there is plenty of room for the person as they walk. Sometimes the taller person has a longer gait and the narrow width at the hip could be a problem if it is much longer than the cover up.
DID IT LOOK LIKE THE PHOTO/DRAWING ON THE PATTERN ENVELOPE ONCE YOU WERE DONE SEWING?
Yes, I made the two cover ups above according to the pattern for testing. I chose to make the coverup length, full sleeve, and add pom-pom trim to one. I also added the front and back elastic waist casing, but later removed the front elastic from the pom-pom trim one due to cutting it too narrow my first run. **The ruffled coverup was a hack and is posted on the Made for Mermaids Blog.**
WERE THE INSTRUCTIONS EASY TO FOLLOW?
The instructions are easy to follow, however I feel like this is not quite as easy of a pattern as most Made for Mermaids Designs. This type of pattern is also usually sewn with a slinky, sheer, or drapey fabric which can be more challenging to work with. You will need to be able to insert a v-neck facing, mark stitching lines carefully, and be confident hemming more delicate fabrics if you choose to use one.
WHAT DID YOU PARTICULARLY LIKE OR DISLIKE ABOUT THE PATTERN?
I love love love the pom pom trim, the different length options, the fact you could use this as a dress depending on fabric choice. The pattern is layered and no trim pages for much easier prep.
WOULD YOU SEW IT AGAIN? WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS?
Yes, I have made three so far, included a hack for the Made for Mermaids blog about adding a ruffle. I see this being a great cover up option for years to come. I also like that you can make this in a knit fabric and would like to try that. I would recommend this to an adventurous beginner and above.
CONCLUSION:
This is a super cute cover up pattern with added options and hacks to make it even more versatile. If you need a cute swim cover up and something that works well with both knits and woven fabrics, this is a great option.
You can find the ruffle hack on the Made for Mermaids blog here.
