Who here loves a bit of sparkle? I am guessing if you are reading this post you may be a fan of a touch of sequins now and then. I have two looks for you showcasing this amazing stretch sequin that is currently available from Mily Mae Fabrics. Today I am talking all about Simplicity 8982 which I am loving right now for the holidays.
This is my absolute favorite piece I have made in a while. The top is unbelievably soft and cozy but is elevated from basic to fab with the addition of sequin sleeves. The amazing thing about this pattern is how quick and easy it is to put together. Often times I feel a bit jumbled when putting together Big 4 patterns compared to Indie ones, but this one was super easy. I made a slight modification to the sleeve to make it a bit bigger in hopes of getting closer to the inspiration for this sweatshirt- found here. Here is a pic of my modification:
I added about 3 inches in length to the sleeve and cut and spread the sleeve to create a bit more fullness. You can see from my finished top it didn’t add a ton of difference to the pattern, just a touch more flare on the sleeve.
Simplicity 8982 Pattern Review
PATTERN DESCRIPTION:
Easy to Sew Misses’ Dress or two-piece top and skirt. Designed and sized for stretch knits only. Dress is below-knee length with long sleeves. Top has straight or cuffed sleeve options. Pull-on skirt is elasticated at waist. Two length options.
PATTERN SIZING:
6-14 – I cut an 8 bust graded to a 10 hip. This is about one size down from what I typically cut, but the Big 4 patterns tend to run big and I wanted a more fitted bodice so I cut smaller and I am happy with the fit.
Supplies Needed:
Stretch Knits- I used this super soft and luxurious brushed french terry on the main body and the cuffs/neckline so they would be soft and the stretch sequins on the sleeves. I made sure the areas with sequin are not really rubbing on my skin as they can be a tad scratchy. Both of these fabrics are from Mily Mae Fabrics but sadly the french terry is sold out.
DID IT LOOK LIKE THE PHOTO/DRAWING ON THE PATTERN ENVELOPE ONCE YOU WERE DONE SEWING?
Yes, I made view C and other than the modifying the sleeve slightly I did not alter it at all. I love the flare in the sleeve shape and the overall look of this pattern.
WERE THE INSTRUCTIONS EASY TO FOLLOW?
Very easy. There were not any difficult steps that I could see when I read through the pattern quickly at the beginning. I didn’t use them while sewing, but the top is fairly straight forward to put together.
WHAT DID YOU PARTICULARLY LIKE OR DISLIKE ABOUT THE PATTERN?
I love the sleeve shape and the extra long cuffs. There were no dislikes.
WOULD YOU SEW IT AGAIN? WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS?
Yes and yes. I plan on making some more because I love how quick and easy this one comes together.
CONCLUSION:
This simple and stylish top is a great piece to add to your fall and winter wardrobe. I can’t wait to have a couple more of these in my closet. I love the pop of sparkle by using sequins on the sleeve and can’t wait to think of my next fabric to use for another.
