I was never one to wear a dress on road trips, but something prompted me to give it a try. Imagine my shock when wearing this dress for a 12 hour trip turned out to be the most comfortable outfit I have ever worn. Bonus that I looked somewhat pulled together when stopping for food and restroom breaks! Since the dress was so comfortable in the car, it should come as no surprise that this dress is also the most comfortable dress I have ever sewn, road trip or not. And what’s even more fantastic, is that it is made using a free pattern. Read on to see the details for this cozy dress.

I first created this dress as a pattern tester for Made for Mermaids. You can read my full review on the pattern here. The pattern was created as a freebie for the Made for Mermaids Facebook community. If you are new to finding awesome free patterns, make sure you stop back next week to see my Beginner’s Guide to Finding Free Sewing Patterns. This amazing free pattern is the Paige Piko. I made a couple easy modifications to help me create an even more comfortable dress for myself.
The first modification was to use the side waist tie hack that can be found on the Made for Mermaids blog here. This simple change makes the waist more defined and yet adjustable. The other change I made was to add to the length. I found when I first made this pattern the dress was a tad on the short side for my preference. I added 3 inches to this one and I love the longer length. I was comfortable chasing 4 kids, getting in and out of cars, and never worried about a wardrobe malfunction in windy weather.
But arguably, the thing that makes this the most comfortable dress I have ever sewn is this amazing fabric. The brushed french terry from Mily Mae Fabrics is so amazingly soft. It comes in several colors and oh my goodness, it is a game changer. It is soft and cozy and washes up great. I am still shocked I shared some with this handsome fella, but those big brown eyes have a way of getting what they want 🙂
My son is wearing the Dax Pattern from Petite Stitchery and Co.
So next time you find yourself needing a comfortable piece of clothing, consider using this extremely soft fabric. And, if you haven’t given one of the Made for Mermaids free patterns a try yet, this is a great one. So many tester pictures and options within the facebook group are there to inspire you.
